History of Owlthorpe Forrest Setting

The map of August 2000 shows the plan of the Owlthorpe Forrest Setting which was planted by the developer of the Woodland Heights housing development. The objective of the Owlthorpe Forrest Setting was to soften the harshness of the development into the natural environment. The cost of the Forrest Setting was covered by part of the Section 106 monies the developer was required to pay to the local community.
The map shows the planting schedule for planting areas A, B, C, D, and E. For each area it shows the whip size in height, the species and the percentage by area. Also, the standards by size in height, the species and the number planted.
The map also shows the kick pitch which was positioned in totally the wrong area for two reasons. Firstly, modern thinking is that young peoples play areas should be positioned in an area that is in clear public view. The secluded aspect of its position has resulted in many acts of vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Secondly the pitch was located adjacent to planting area E an area of existing damp grassland to be retained dew to existing grass species. An example of a good location for a young persons play area is the skateboard park by the side of the Hackenthorpe Supertram station.
In April 2009 the Owlthorpe Community Forum carried out maintenance on the Forest Setting, under the guidance of Sheffield Countryside Conservation Trust, removing the tree guards that the trees had outgrown.
